Palomar Health Partners with RAD Technology Medical Systems to Construct a New Crisis Stabilization Unit

AVENTURA, Fla., November 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Palomar Health, an Escondido, California-based health care district, and RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD), a design-build construction company specializing in patented modular building systems for the healthcare industry, announced plans to construct a standalone crisis stabilization unit (CSU) on the Palomar Medical Center Escondido campus. When completed, this unit will provide short-term care for patients experiencing an acute psychiatric and/or substance use crisis.

For the last 10 years, hospitalization for mental or substance use disorders has increased at a faster rate than any other clinical disease category for hospital admission. This makes the CSU critical to serving the needs of San Diego North County Inland communities by freeing Emergency Department beds, stabilizing mental health patients in a less restrictive environment and improving community safety.

“This program puts patients first,” said Sheila Brown, Palomar Health Vice President of Continuum of Care. “We go to great lengths to make sure our patients are treated by the highest quality behavioral health professionals, in a stress-reducing atmosphere in a timely manner.”

Palomar Health currently operates an eight-bed CSU at its downtown Escondido campus, which is in the process of being sold. When the new facility is completed, it will consist of 6,000 square feet and include capacity for 16 patient treatment areas, patient showers, a check-in area, storage for belongings, a nurses’ station, medication storage and an outdoor lounge. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early spring 2018, and the CSU will open and treat patients by the summer 2018.

RAD’s modular technology and method of project delivery and time savings was exactly what the project needed.

RAD worked collaboratively with the Palomar Health team and San Diego based architecture firm Mascari Warner Architects, to design a customized two-story CSU facility with a curved floor plan. This maximizes the available space on the small site to ensure the entire program will fit into one facility. The floor plan of the building is designed to provide an efficient and secure patient experience.

“This is our latest clinical facility and our first crisis stabilization project,” said John Lefkus, RAD’s President. “We are excited that our modular technology and financial model will allow Palomar Health to enter a new market.”

Univeristy of Michigan Medical Center Installs Healing Portals™

AVENTURA, Fla., November 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — RAD Technology Medical Systems announced today that they have installed Healing Portals™ at the University of Michigan Cancer Center in Ann Arbor, after installing four at UCSD.  The University of Michigan Cancer Center first worked with RAD in 2013 when they installed a RAD PRO vault and clinic next to their existing facility to treat patients during the upgrading of the equipment in their existing vaults.

“The RAD PRO Vault and clinic has been a wonderful addition to our facility,” said Kathy Lash, Director of Operations at the University of Michigan for Radiation Oncology. Working with RAD on the facility was one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve ever been involved with, so I jumped at the chance to work with them again and have a Healing Portal™ installed. I’m really looking forward to hearing the patients’ feedback,” Lash added.

Healing Portals™ are artwork for vault doors. Photographic images are installed, turning the radiotherapy treatment room doors into something beautiful or interesting to look at. RAD has worked constructing radiotherapy vaults for years and always thought something needed to be done to the large cumbersome vault doors.  This led to the creation of Healing Portals™.

The first Healing Portals™ were installed at the University of California San Diego.  Two Healing Portals™ were installed in the RAD PRO vault that is located at the Moores Cancer Center and the other two were installed in the radiotherapy suite located across the street.

“Our patients love the new Healing Portals™,” said Mary Collins, Clinical Operations Manager at UCSD Moores Cancer Center. “We’ve gotten lots of positive feedback. Many patients have commented that the Healing Portals™ make entering the treatment room less intimidating.”

The goal of Healing Portals™ is to provide a distraction for the patients while promoting calmness, relaxation and a healing environment. Healing Portals™ are not only available to cancer centers with a RAD PRO Vault or TRV, but also to any cancer center who wishes to transform their vault doors.

RAD Technology Medical Systems Provides Glendale Adventist Medical Center with Patented TRV

AVENTURA, Fla.July 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — RAD Technology Medical Systems is pleased to announce their most recent project at Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, California.  RAD Technology has provided Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC), with their patented Temporary Radiotherapy Vault, or TRV.  The TRV will be on site for about 150 days while GAMC renovates their department and upgrades their existing linear accelerator.

GAMC is bringing one of the most advanced radiation therapy technologies yet developed for the treatment of cancer. The Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, currently scheduled to begin service in Fall 2017, is able to destroy cancer cells with more precision and greater accuracy, and often in less time and with fewer treatments. This is the latest cancer-fighting technology available.

“We are very excited about the installation of the RAD TRV,” said Dennis Quagliani, Director of Cancer Services. “It was important for us to have this temporary facility available while we work on upgrading the cancer center so we do not have to stop or hinder patient care. It will also eliminate the need to send our patients outside of the Glendale area for daily treatments that can extend up to 5-6 weeks. The project couldn’t have been easier, as RAD Technology provided full turnkey services, handling everything from start to finish,” explains Dennis Quagliani.

In collaboration with hospital administration, RAD Technology managed the permitting, site preparation, installation of the below grade patented foundation system and electrical service connections.   Once those were in place, RAD Technology’s project team coordinated the delivery of the eight (8) modules comprising the temporary cancer center, assembled the facility in under ten (10) days and managed the remaining site work to completion.

The TRV is a comprehensive solution that arrives on site and is typically ready to make Beam in 5-7 days.  The TRV comes fully furnished with a pre-commissioned linear accelerator, reception area, waiting room, office space and restroom.

“Every project we work on is rewarding, knowing that we are facilitating our client’s move to the latest technology in the fight against cancer,” said Kenneth Wright, Director of TRV Services at RAD Technology.  Managing the complete process for the client allows them to focus on being good healthcare providers while leaving the facility and equipment challenges to RAD Technology.”

The TRV offers all the comforts of a permanent facility and is relocatable, allowing organizations to use the facility to support their upgrades at multiple locations.  RAD Technology is pleased to be able to help GAMC continue treating patients while modernizing their department and upgrading to state-of-the-art cancer care technology.

MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena Takes Advantage of RAD Technology’s Patented TRV (Temporary Radiotherapy Vault)

AVENTURA, Fla., May 16 2017. RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) and MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena broke ground the end of March. RAD is providing MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena with their patented TRV (Temporary Radiotherapy Vault). Thanks to RAD Technology Medical Systems and their innovative Temporary Radiotherapy Vault, doctors and patients will experience no interruptions to their treatment schedules while the cancer center upgrades their existing linear accelerator.

MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena, located in Northern Michigan, is part of the MidMichigan Health family, a non-profit health system, headquartered in Midland, Mich, that is affiliated with Michigan Medicine, the health care division of the University of Michigan. MidMichigan Health covers a 22-county region with medical centers in Midland, Alpena, Alma, Clare, Gladwin and now Mt. Pleasant. With only a single vault and radiotherapy machine, the Medical Center in Alpena was left with a tough decision. Do they shut down while they install a new linear accelerator and send their patients to a facility over two hours away, or do they continue to operate with older equipment? With RAD Technology’s TRV, there is a new choice. Clinicians can use the temporary vault and equipment to continue treating patients while a new linac is installed in the existing facility. It is an option that saves time and money, without sacrificing patient care.

“We first learned about RAD Technology Medical Systems over four years ago. We referred them to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor where they placed a PRO System. We were very impressed with the project and have been looking forward to the time when we’d be able to take advantage of their patented technology,” said Douglas Kreis, director of diagnostic imaging and oncology services at MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena. “We are excited to finally break ground and are pleased to have a way to continue treating patients while we upgrade to our new Varian TrueBeam.”

The TRV is being installed on their site not far from their existing vault and comes equipped with a pre-commissioned Varian linear accelerator. The facility also includes a reception area, waiting room, office space and restroom. The TRV is a complete solution that RAD will install onsite in just days.

“The TRV offers all the comforts of a permanent facility and has revolutionized the way hospital administrators think about upgrade timelines,” said John Lefkus, RAD Technology President. “This project is another step toward RAD creating a new normal. The TRV is so easily relocated that this building is now at its fifth location. We are proud to have a solution that allows facilities to easily upgrade their equipment without displacing patients and stopping treatment,” added Lefkus.

Swedish Medical Center gets New Interim Modular Sterilization Facility

AVENTURA, Fla., Jan. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Swedish Medical Center First Hill Campus was faced with the untenable challenge of continuing surgery while building a new hospital facility.  Located in Seattle, Washington, the Center is the Northwest’s largest, most comprehensive medical center.  RAD Technology Medical Systems was able to accommodate an ideal solution by providing a building for their Sterilization Processing Department next to their existing surgical suite.  RAD provided the interim facility and partnered with STERIS Corporation, a leading provider of infection prevention and surgical products and services, to ensure the building came fully equipped with the sterilization equipment they needed.

The project had a very aggressive timeline and choosing RAD and their factory-fabricated construction method enabled Swedish to relocate these services and stay on construction schedule for the new tower project.

While construction was taking place in the factory, STERIS worked to supply the appropriate washing, decontamination and sterilization equipment required to support the entire sterile processing needs of the Swedish surgical staff during the construction of their new hospital tower. RAD and STERIS coordinated together to have a majority of the equipment installed while the facility was at the factory, thus saving additional time.

The final product consisted of a two story, 12,000 SF building with modular elevators and sterilization equipment installed. The concrete and steel building meets all the same codes as a permanent structure including Seattle energy codes. “While the structure is intended to serve an interim need” commented RAD Architect George Olear, “The facility is built as if it were to be used for 50 years. While mobile trailer solutions have been used to replace individual pieces of sterilization equipment, the challenge of replacing an entire department for a multiple of years needed a new approach.”

Now that the RAD sterilization processing facility is complete, Swedish is able to demolish their existing site and commence construction on the new hospital tower.  RAD, with help from STERIS, was able to meet Swedish’s time frame and provide them with a convenient solution for their sterilization needs in close proximity to their surgical suite.

RAD is a pioneer in the modular medical market and uses patented solutions for a variety of medical specialties. Solutions include a Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) which can be erected and in operation with a linear accelerator in as little as five days. The TRV is the answer for cancer facilities looking to upgrade their equipment without closing down for a period of months and denying patients of treatment during that time.

“We specialize in complex and accelerated projects for the medical industry”, stated company president, John Lefkus. “RAD does the project that was previously impossible or never done before. “Our history includes many firsts coupled with implausible schedules and unique leasing solutions.”

RAD has been successful in constructing many specialty enabling projects to meet various healthcare organizations needs quickly and efficiently. They take pride in being able to help the healthcare industry in this manner and look forward to continuing to do so both domestically and internationally.

Cancer Patients and Cancer Facilities alike to Benefit from New Patented Technology

AVENTURA, Fla., Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) is adding two new patents to its portfolio of modular building technologies for cancer treatment facilities.  RAD has received patent approvals for their Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) from both the Japanese Patent Office and the European Patent Office.  These new patents protect the specialized means and methods that RAD uses to construct high energy radiation vaults. RAD was issued two similar patents by the United States Patent Office last year.

“As the demand for radiotherapy continues to grow worldwide, RAD is pleased to be able to bring their patented technology to help cancer patients in Europe and Japan,” states RAD’s President, John Lefkus.  “Hospitals and cancer clinics constantly need to upgrade equipment in order to take full advantage of the latest developments in cancer therapy and provide the best available form of treatment.  Our TRV provides a treatment machine in a temporary facility which enables organizations to continue treating patients while modernizing their program with no interruption to patient treatments or business.  The temporary facility can arrive onsite and be ready for occupancy in just weeks.”

The RAD modular methodology is driven by three key values;

  • Time: The facility solutions offered by the RAD PRO can be delivered in one third the time of traditional construction methods. By using offsite construction, we are able to provide an unprecedented approach that is efficient and flexible. This impacts patient accessibility to the latest care and gives institutions a hedge over competitors looking to enter their market. RAD can install its TRV cancer facility and perform a radiation survey with its pre-commissioned linac in just 5 days.
  • Technology: The modular technology also provides significant value and flexibility. In traditional construction, the shielding solution is cast into the concrete structure or concrete blocks. RAD offers a shielding method that can be modified without the cost and disruption of expensive lead and high density block solutions. And the ultimate flexibility is moving the entire facility to another location at a fractional cost if demand or market conditions change.
  • Unique Financing: One of the most distinctive values is the financing approach RADs solutions offer.  The modular system transforms the financing opportunities significantly.  A recoverable asset, without destructive demolition, can be treated as equipment or tangible personal property allowing operational leases or service contracts to be structured for large institutions not seeking to deploy capital or wishing to avoid further impairment of their balance sheets with additional debt.

RAD continues to implement this “New Normal” in radiotherapy equipment upgrades on the international stage.  Cancer centers which were previously paralyzed by the lack of an interim solution will now be free to plan their advancements to the next generation of radiotherapy devices as the technology develops, rather than skipping whole generations of advancements as is now too often the case.  As stated by Kenneth Wright, RAD Technology’s Director of TRV Services, “The simple truth is that cancer centers should not be required to stop providing radiotherapy services to the community in order to improve services to the community.”

Institutions in Europe are primarily state sponsored and while closing down for several months may not let the competition in, it deprives citizens of timely and perhaps lifesaving cancer treatment.  RAD has been successful in the United States with the TRV technology and leasing and now looks to continue that success in Japan and Europe.

Nearly 66% of cancer patients benefit from radiotherapy and RAD Technology’s newest patent could facilitate this treatment

AVENTURA, Fla., Nov. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ –RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) has added a new patent to its expanding portfolio of modular building technologies for cancer treatment facilities. Issued by the United States Patent Office on October 27th, 2015, the patent protects specialized means and methods to construct high energy radiation vaults. RAD also received a patent earlier this year on its Temporary Radiotherapy Vault or TRV this past May. http://radtechnology.com/news/rad-technology-medical-systems-announces-new-patented-technology-to-assist-cancer-patients-and-cancer-facilities-alike/

RAD’s patented modular system has been used by some of the world’s most prestigious cancer centers shown above is UCSD La Jolla (left) and Banner MD Anderson Sun City AZ

“With an expanding global demand for radiotherapy and the facilities required to house the equipment and patients, new approaches to alleviate the challenge are being welcomed by the industry,” according to John Lefkus, RAD’s President. “The modular approach offers unprecedented flexibility compared to conventional concrete and concrete block construction.”

The RAD approach is driven by three key values.

  • Time: The solutions offered by RAD can be delivered in one third the time of traditional construction methods.
In traditional construction, both the shielding and machine requirements are cast into the concrete structure. RAD offers a component approach to equipment installation facilitating future upgrades along with a shielding method that can be modified without the cost and disruption of expensive lead and high density block solutions.
  • Unique Financing: One of the most distinctive values is the financing approach the RAD solutions offer. The modular system transforms the financing opportunities significantly. A recoverable asset, without destructive demolition, can be treated as equipment or tangible personal property allowing operational leases to be structured for large institutions not seeking to deploy capital or wishing to avoid further impairment of their balance sheets with debt.

New revenue opportunities can be stalled during the arduous and lengthy struggle to free up capital.  With an off balance sheet lease made possible by RAD’s patented modular technology, institutions can develop facilities and services, open new markets and start generating revenue within a few months without debt impairment, bypassing the months or years it otherwise takes for capital funding to be available.

The struggle in social medicine countries is even greater; it can be the difference between life and death.

According to The Lancet Oncology Commission’s report presented at the 2015 European Cancer Congress in Vienna, Austria, low and middle Income Countries have 80% of the global cancer burden but only 5% of the resources for cancer control. This illustrates the potential international demand that may benefit from the patented RAD modular system. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-09/tl-tlo092315.php

“With the US a leader in cancer care, we recognize the opportunity to export RAD facility expertise abroad to both industrialized nations and middle and low income countries.” Lefkus adds, “RAD is well positioned to develop in these global markets with leases or managed services contracts.”

The specialized nature of high energy radiation facilities is not normally a local expertise. Couple this with uncertain clinical resources, the flexibility of the RAD modular approach allows for recovery and relocation if the local market or support erodes.
