Swedish Medical Center gets New Interim Modular Sterilization Facility

AVENTURA, Fla., Jan. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Swedish Medical Center First Hill Campus was faced with the untenable challenge of continuing surgery while building a new hospital facility.  Located in Seattle, Washington, the Center is the Northwest’s largest, most comprehensive medical center.  RAD Technology Medical Systems was able to accommodate an ideal solution by providing a building for their Sterilization Processing Department next to their existing surgical suite.  RAD provided the interim facility and partnered with STERIS Corporation, a leading provider of infection prevention and surgical products and services, to ensure the building came fully equipped with the sterilization equipment they needed.

The project had a very aggressive timeline and choosing RAD and their factory-fabricated construction method enabled Swedish to relocate these services and stay on construction schedule for the new tower project.

While construction was taking place in the factory, STERIS worked to supply the appropriate washing, decontamination and sterilization equipment required to support the entire sterile processing needs of the Swedish surgical staff during the construction of their new hospital tower. RAD and STERIS coordinated together to have a majority of the equipment installed while the facility was at the factory, thus saving additional time.

The final product consisted of a two story, 12,000 SF building with modular elevators and sterilization equipment installed. The concrete and steel building meets all the same codes as a permanent structure including Seattle energy codes. “While the structure is intended to serve an interim need” commented RAD Architect George Olear, “The facility is built as if it were to be used for 50 years. While mobile trailer solutions have been used to replace individual pieces of sterilization equipment, the challenge of replacing an entire department for a multiple of years needed a new approach.”

Now that the RAD sterilization processing facility is complete, Swedish is able to demolish their existing site and commence construction on the new hospital tower.  RAD, with help from STERIS, was able to meet Swedish’s time frame and provide them with a convenient solution for their sterilization needs in close proximity to their surgical suite.

RAD is a pioneer in the modular medical market and uses patented solutions for a variety of medical specialties. Solutions include a Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) which can be erected and in operation with a linear accelerator in as little as five days. The TRV is the answer for cancer facilities looking to upgrade their equipment without closing down for a period of months and denying patients of treatment during that time.

“We specialize in complex and accelerated projects for the medical industry”, stated company president, John Lefkus. “RAD does the project that was previously impossible or never done before. “Our history includes many firsts coupled with implausible schedules and unique leasing solutions.”

RAD has been successful in constructing many specialty enabling projects to meet various healthcare organizations needs quickly and efficiently. They take pride in being able to help the healthcare industry in this manner and look forward to continuing to do so both domestically and internationally.

Cancer Patients and Cancer Facilities alike to Benefit from New Patented Technology

AVENTURA, Fla., Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) is adding two new patents to its portfolio of modular building technologies for cancer treatment facilities.  RAD has received patent approvals for their Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) from both the Japanese Patent Office and the European Patent Office.  These new patents protect the specialized means and methods that RAD uses to construct high energy radiation vaults. RAD was issued two similar patents by the United States Patent Office last year.

“As the demand for radiotherapy continues to grow worldwide, RAD is pleased to be able to bring their patented technology to help cancer patients in Europe and Japan,” states RAD’s President, John Lefkus.  “Hospitals and cancer clinics constantly need to upgrade equipment in order to take full advantage of the latest developments in cancer therapy and provide the best available form of treatment.  Our TRV provides a treatment machine in a temporary facility which enables organizations to continue treating patients while modernizing their program with no interruption to patient treatments or business.  The temporary facility can arrive onsite and be ready for occupancy in just weeks.”

The RAD modular methodology is driven by three key values;

  • Time: The facility solutions offered by the RAD PRO can be delivered in one third the time of traditional construction methods. By using offsite construction, we are able to provide an unprecedented approach that is efficient and flexible. This impacts patient accessibility to the latest care and gives institutions a hedge over competitors looking to enter their market. RAD can install its TRV cancer facility and perform a radiation survey with its pre-commissioned linac in just 5 days.
  • Technology: The modular technology also provides significant value and flexibility. In traditional construction, the shielding solution is cast into the concrete structure or concrete blocks. RAD offers a shielding method that can be modified without the cost and disruption of expensive lead and high density block solutions. And the ultimate flexibility is moving the entire facility to another location at a fractional cost if demand or market conditions change.
  • Unique Financing: One of the most distinctive values is the financing approach RADs solutions offer.  The modular system transforms the financing opportunities significantly.  A recoverable asset, without destructive demolition, can be treated as equipment or tangible personal property allowing operational leases or service contracts to be structured for large institutions not seeking to deploy capital or wishing to avoid further impairment of their balance sheets with additional debt.

RAD continues to implement this “New Normal” in radiotherapy equipment upgrades on the international stage.  Cancer centers which were previously paralyzed by the lack of an interim solution will now be free to plan their advancements to the next generation of radiotherapy devices as the technology develops, rather than skipping whole generations of advancements as is now too often the case.  As stated by Kenneth Wright, RAD Technology’s Director of TRV Services, “The simple truth is that cancer centers should not be required to stop providing radiotherapy services to the community in order to improve services to the community.”

Institutions in Europe are primarily state sponsored and while closing down for several months may not let the competition in, it deprives citizens of timely and perhaps lifesaving cancer treatment.  RAD has been successful in the United States with the TRV technology and leasing and now looks to continue that success in Japan and Europe.

Nearly 66% of cancer patients benefit from radiotherapy and RAD Technology’s newest patent could facilitate this treatment

AVENTURA, Fla., Nov. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ –RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) has added a new patent to its expanding portfolio of modular building technologies for cancer treatment facilities. Issued by the United States Patent Office on October 27th, 2015, the patent protects specialized means and methods to construct high energy radiation vaults. RAD also received a patent earlier this year on its Temporary Radiotherapy Vault or TRV this past May. http://radtechnology.com/news/rad-technology-medical-systems-announces-new-patented-technology-to-assist-cancer-patients-and-cancer-facilities-alike/

RAD’s patented modular system has been used by some of the world’s most prestigious cancer centers shown above is UCSD La Jolla (left) and Banner MD Anderson Sun City AZ

“With an expanding global demand for radiotherapy and the facilities required to house the equipment and patients, new approaches to alleviate the challenge are being welcomed by the industry,” according to John Lefkus, RAD’s President. “The modular approach offers unprecedented flexibility compared to conventional concrete and concrete block construction.”

The RAD approach is driven by three key values.

  • Time: The solutions offered by RAD can be delivered in one third the time of traditional construction methods.
In traditional construction, both the shielding and machine requirements are cast into the concrete structure. RAD offers a component approach to equipment installation facilitating future upgrades along with a shielding method that can be modified without the cost and disruption of expensive lead and high density block solutions.
  • Unique Financing: One of the most distinctive values is the financing approach the RAD solutions offer. The modular system transforms the financing opportunities significantly. A recoverable asset, without destructive demolition, can be treated as equipment or tangible personal property allowing operational leases to be structured for large institutions not seeking to deploy capital or wishing to avoid further impairment of their balance sheets with debt.

New revenue opportunities can be stalled during the arduous and lengthy struggle to free up capital.  With an off balance sheet lease made possible by RAD’s patented modular technology, institutions can develop facilities and services, open new markets and start generating revenue within a few months without debt impairment, bypassing the months or years it otherwise takes for capital funding to be available.

The struggle in social medicine countries is even greater; it can be the difference between life and death.

According to The Lancet Oncology Commission’s report presented at the 2015 European Cancer Congress in Vienna, Austria, low and middle Income Countries have 80% of the global cancer burden but only 5% of the resources for cancer control. This illustrates the potential international demand that may benefit from the patented RAD modular system. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2015-09/tl-tlo092315.php

“With the US a leader in cancer care, we recognize the opportunity to export RAD facility expertise abroad to both industrialized nations and middle and low income countries.” Lefkus adds, “RAD is well positioned to develop in these global markets with leases or managed services contracts.”

The specialized nature of high energy radiation facilities is not normally a local expertise. Couple this with uncertain clinical resources, the flexibility of the RAD modular approach allows for recovery and relocation if the local market or support erodes.

Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Providing Cancer Treatment Close to Home in Sun City, AZ

Aventura, Fla., Nov. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — In the fight against cancer, getting the right treatment matters.  With the selection of Design-Builder RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD), Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert has expanded its radiation oncology program, bringing new treatment expertise to patients at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City under a greatly accelerated schedule.  Banner MD Anderson relied on RAD’s team of innovators, problem solvers and seasoned medical industry veterans who have worked on cancer care facilities for many years and have developed the unique skill set needed to be an industry leader in the cancer facility market.

The program integrates radiation cancer treatment at all three locations with Banner MD Anderson, including MD Anderson Cancer Center’s world-renowned approach to cancer care and access to subspecialty experts in both Gilbert and Houston. Radiation oncology patients will also have access to many of the programs and services offered at the comprehensive cancer center in Gilbert. Eileen Reagan, service director for oncology at Banner Boswell Medical Center mentioned, “We’re able to reach farther into the Northwest Valley.  We’re very excited.”

The facts about the new cancer center delineate exactly how unique RAD’s patented modular building solution is. The new facility is 5,214 total square feet and it can be relocated, expanded, or left permanently. The building modules arrived on May 11, 2015 and Banner took occupancy on June 29th and the accelerator installation began.  Therefore, the entire facility was assembled and made ready in 49 days.  The facility consists of 16 separate building modules and parts of the facility were fabricated in Quebec, Indiana, and Arizona.  The therapy room is surrounded by over two million pounds of mass to shield the patients, public, and clinicians.  The shielding is designed to protect radiation energy levels at 180 times that of a normal diagnostic x-ray.  The building includes shielded spaces for a linear accelerator and a CT SIM.

“Offsite or factory modular construction has many advantages over conventional methods,” stated RAD President, John Lefkus.  “These advantages are most obvious in healthcare facilities where access to the latest cancer treatments can have a profound effect.  Once complete, evidence of factory construction does not exist.”

The expansion of radiation treatment to Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City will bring the number of facility-based Banner MD Anderson radiation oncology programs beyond the walls of the Gilbert campus to three. These services are also available at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale and Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa.

“This expansion at Banner Boswell allows us to provide radiation treatment close to where patients live, work collaboratively with physicians in Sun City and surrounding communities, and offer the same high-quality cancer treatment that has made Banner MD Andersen so widely respected,” said Dave Cheney, CEO of Banner Boswell.  “I’m most proud of this community for their generosity in making this happen.”

“Flexibility is one of the hallmarks of the RAD modular approach,” Logan Scow, project manager for Banner Health stated.  “We can receive an additional vault if our demands increase” when speculating on the growth the region. The patented modular system provided by RAD can accommodate any new demand or technology that Banner Health may seek in the future.

New Technology with a History of Cancer Care comes to the Tavares Community

TAVARES Fla. and AVENTURA Fla., Aug. 11, 2015 — In the fight against cancer, the latest technology is essential for ensuring the best of all outcomes.  The challenge for many cancer patients, is finding the best doctors and the best radiotherapy equipment available to them. Florida Oncology Tavares now has the cancer industry’s latest tools at its disposal including Stereotactic Radiosurgery which will be available for the first time in Lake County.

The new technology being employed in the center is not limited to radiation therapy equipment.  Specifically, Florida Oncology Tavares will be creating its facility with the use of patented modular technology which will allow their over 2 million pound protective vault facility to be erected in a single day as an addition to existing medical office space.

“RAD Technology Medical Systems has been a great partner in allowing us to plan and build a facility with world-class technology in minimal time.  Their expertise in all aspects of planning, equipping, and construction of radiation therapy facilities has allowed us to focus on our area of expertise — treating cancer patients,” stated Dr. Jeffrey Brabham, medical director at Florida Oncology Tavares.

“And quicker access to the best doctors and equipment is what drives our accelerated approach,” added RAD President, John Lefkus. “The RAD PRO system delivers a highly flexible solution that saves time and provides inherent features for future upgrading.”

The Florida Oncology Tavares facility has been designed by RAD to provide a tranquil environment of healing for cancer patients away from stresses and congestion of a hospital setting. Its highly qualified staff has been carefully selected based upon both experience in cancer care and personal ability to deliver patient-centered care, according to Dr. Brabham.

Dr. Brabham’s name is, no doubt, familiar to many Lake County residents.  He has been in practice in the area since 2009, previously at Florida Hospital Waterman, where he served as its Cancer Committee chair.  Dr. Brabham is a cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and then received both an M.D and an M.B.A. from the University of Florida.  A Florida native, he was raised in Tampa and has once again called central Florida home for the last 6 years.

Florida Oncology Tavares is an independent radiation oncology practice that will be free to collaborate with other physicians without regard for their hospital or practice affiliation. With the Varian TrueBeam™ linear accelerator, the practice will bring to Lake County a state-of-the art radiation therapy platform that includes technologies such as motion management, integrated imaging, and high dose rates.  These capabilities will enable treatments such as stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to be performed in significantly less time than with equipment currently available in the area. Moreover, the TrueBeam™ will bring stereotactic radiosurgery for brain tumors to Lake County for the first time, eliminating the need for patients to leave the community for this treatment.

RAD Technology Medical Systems announces new patented technology to assist Cancer Patients and Cancer Facilities alike

AVENTURA, Fla., June 16, 2015 — In the fight against cancer, the latest technology is essential for ensuring the best outcomes. The challenge for many cancer centers and their patients is the gap in services that comes with the process of upgrading sophisticated radiotherapy equipment. Replacing a linear accelerator often takes as much as 3 to 5 months, including remodeling, testing, commissioning and training.

Some larger cancer care providers may have the ability to transfer patients from one piece of equipment to another, avoiding this disruption in services. Many, however, do not have alternate means or extra capacity to provide these lifesaving therapies during this transitional period.

The Temporary Radiotherapy Vault, or TRV, invented by RAD Technology Medical Systems, has conquered that challenge with a new patented solution.

“The TRV is a temporary solution that duplicates the services of a cancer center with both facilities and equipment that are erected and operational in as little as five days,” according to RAD President John Lefkus. “Our company simply rents the TRV, placing it in their parking lot or a nearby open area for the period of time required to upgrade the existing equipment. Once the new equipment is installed and ready to deliver state of the art cancer therapy treatments, we remove the temporary facility and relocate it to the next customer’s site.”

While it sounds simple, the challenge is formidable. The typical linear accelerator is surrounded by two million pounds of mass to safely shield the public and staff from the high energy radiation.  And no one has ever transported a pre-commissioned and pre-cabled machine from site to site.

So how does RAD achieve all this in mere days?

“We have built the technology relying in part on other radiotherapy facility patents previously developed by RAD,” Lefkus responds.  “But the TRV takes a leap forward by offering a pre-installed and pre-commissioned accelerator in a transportable building package complete with clinical functions and utilizing a specialized foundation approach.”

The patent issued May 12th by the United States Patent Office is for a “Relocatable Radiation Vault and Methods of Assembly and Use” which broadly covers any radiotherapy facility solution that would be in place for a year or less. Under development and testing for nearly five years, the resulting RAD TRV solution and performance has been astonishing.

Most cancer centers would be pleased to design, build and install equipment in a facility over the course of a single year, yet RAD has transported and installed the same TRV for use by three clients in three different cities during the same calendar year. That string of installations started at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene NH where Paul Pezone, Vice President of Clinical & Support Services, stated during his use of the service, “Every morning I park next to the TRV site and smile. It’s a nice reminder of one of the best projects I’ve worked on and one that I’ve learned from.” He further elaborates, “All of RAD’s efforts exceeded our expectations.”

Cheshire’s cancer program, affiliated with Dartmouth-Hitchcock, is vital to the region. The displacement of patient services along with idle staff was the historical norm prior to RAD’s development of the TRV.

“The TRV was a bridge to get us to the next level of technology,” stated John Engstrom, Chief Radiation Therapist at Olympic Medical Center in Sequim WA. Located in the remote Puget Sound region, patients would have traveled for hours (each way) to find similar services which normally require daily therapy for six weeks. The toll this would have placed on patients already faced with combating cancer was untenable.

Lefkus provides an analogy of the paradox facing leading cancer centers and their desire to offer the most advanced services. “Imagine if you had to be without your smart phone for four months to be able to upgrade to the next generation of cellular technology,” he suggests. “You would be challenged with determining at what stage in technology development you bite the bullet and suffer. But most technology is incremental with no clear tipping point and the decision to not move forward denies patients and clinicians the advantages of the best the industry has to offer; technology which is currently available to others in their fight against cancer.”

The new RAD patented solution is the antidote to the upgrading paralysis, allowing advancement without interruption.  The TRV is a complete package and does not even require utilities to function. The facility has both fresh water and sanitary holding tanks which eliminates the need for plumbing lines during its brief deployment. The onboard chiller and power conditioner satisfies the demands of the accelerator and the entire TRV can be run from a generator eliminating any need for electrical service.

As RAD continues to implement this “New Normal” in radiotherapy equipment upgrades, cancer centers which were previously paralyzed by the lack of an interim solution will now be free to plan their advancements to the next generation of radiotherapy devices as the technology develops, rather than skipping whole generations of advancement as is now too often the case.  As stated by Kenneth Wright, RAD Technology’s Director of TRV Services, “The simple truth is that cancer centers should not be required to stop providing radiotherapy services to the community in order to improve those services to the community.”

Temporary “Cancer Center” by RAD Technology Medical Systems allows cancer patients to continue treatment during key upgrade

Aventura, FL and Idaho Falls, March 05, 2014: In the fight against cancer, being on the cutting edge of technology is paramount. Today, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center is announcing the installation of a state-of-the art linear accelerator. This technology, which exceeds any capabilities currently available in the state, will replace EIRMC’s existing linear accelerator that has served over 3000 patients since 2001.

The tear down and installation of the new linear accelerator will take nearly three months, which presented EIRMC with a unique challenge: how to continue providing critical and life-saving radiotherapy to patients who need it today.

A revolutionary approach from RAD Technology Medical Systems was the answer. They constructed an innovative Temporary Radiotherapy Vault (TRV) system which includes a linear accelerator and all the features of our current radiotherapy suite. Patients have already started receiving radiotherapy treatment in this temporary facility while EIRMC’s new equipment is being installed at the Cancer Center.

Prior to the arrival of RAD Technology’s revolutionary technology, the process of updating a linear accelerator would close a facility for several months, forcing patients and doctors to make alternative treatment arrangements. This would be particularly impactful given that EIRMC is the region’s only provider of radiotherapy, a treatment given to about 66% of all cancer patients.

Debra Barlow, Director of Imaging & Radiation Oncology Services, explains: “The challenge was to upgrade our current equipment without displacing our patients. With three months of technical work ahead of us, the impact to the community and cancer patients and their families would have been untenable. EIRMC decided to invest in RAD’s TRV services out of our commitment to the region.”

The TRV II is a groundbreaking, patented product that offers all the comforts of a permanent facility. This modular clinic can be installed onsite in a matter of days. Outfitted with a reception area, waiting room, office space, restroom, and a pre-installed linear accelerator, the TRV II is a full-service solution.

“To help put this amazing technology in context,” RAD President, John Lefkus, explains: “RAD installs a facility and a commissioned accelerator in approximately 5 days. This compares to the 100 days it will take the average client to install and commission just an accelerator. And this TRV has been installed in three different cities, from New Hampshire to Idaho all within a calendar year.”
While the TRV II offers all of the comforts of a permanent facility, this modular clinic can be installed onsite in a matter of days, revolutionizing the way hospital administrators think about upgrade timelines. RAD Technology and its team of experts are on the cutting edge of modular construction, and have the experience to handle all the details of any installation. This makes the TRV II a truly effortless solution for hospitals looking to upgrade their linear accelerator without the burden of downtime.

Shaw Regional Cancer Center Chooses RAD Technology’s Temporary Radiotherapy Vault System to Provide Continuous Care to Patients During New Linear Accelerator Installation

Aventura, FL and Edwards, CO, June 24, 2013: After ten years of service, the linear accelerator at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center is getting an update. Thanks to RAD Technology Medical Systems and their innovative Temporary Radiotherapy Vault system the TRV II, doctors and patients will experience no interruptions to their treatment schedules while the new equipment is installed.

Prior to the arrival of this revolutionary technology, updating a linear accelerator could close a facility for several months. These closures force doctors to make alternative treatment arrangements, often causing patients to travel long distances to receive care. The TRV II from RAD Technology allows the Shaw Regional Cancer Center to continue providing life-saving radiation treatment in a state-of-the-art modular facility while updating their equipment.

Part of the Vail Valley Medical Center, Shaw Regional Cancer Center opened in 2001 and treats about 200 patients a year with a focus on delivering a personalized experience. Utilizing the most advanced technology, coupled with a holistic approach to cancer care, Shaw Regional Cancer Center prides itself on being a small boutique center serving the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

“Shaw Regional Cancer Center is committed to being the best cancer center of any resort community in the world and upgrading to an Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) Linear Accelerator ensures that we continue to lead the pack,” said Lindsay Warner, a spokesperson for Shaw Regional Cancer Center. “We chose to work with RAD Technology because we had unique challenges and they provided a great solution that allowed our patients to continue to receive the best care during our construction process,” Warner added.

With the backing of many generous donors and the support of Vail Valley Medical Center,
Shaw Regional Cancer Center’s new state-of-the-art TrueBeam was purchased from Varian Medical Systems, an industry leader in radiotherapy equipment. “RAD was very easy to work with, responsive and communicative throughout the sales, planning and installation processes,” commented Jason Reynolds, District Sales Manager of Varian Medical Systems. “Once Shaw sat down with RAD, they were able to see the true cost savings of the TRV system.”

In the fight against cancer, being on the cutting edge of technology is paramount. Often, cancer care centers face a tough decision: close down to install a new linear accelerator, or continue to operate with older equipment. With RAD Technology’s TRV II, there is a new choice. Clinicians can use the temporary radiation vault to continue treating patients, while new equipment is installed in the existing facility. It is an option that saves time and money without sacrificing patient care.

“RAD installs a facility and commissioned accelerator in approximately 5 days. This, compared to the 100 days it will take the average client to install and commission just an accelerator, helps put this amazing technology into context,” RAD Technology President, John Lefkus explained.

The TRV II is a revolutionary, patented product, built specifically to meet the needs of cancer care facilities looking to update equipment without any impact on the quality of patient care. Outfitted with a reception area, waiting room, office space, restroom, and a pre-installed linear accelerator, the TRV II is a full-service solution.

While the TRV II offers all of the comforts of a permanent facility, this modular clinic can be installed onsite in a matter of days, revolutionizing the way hospital administrators think about upgrade timelines. RAD Technology and its team of experts are on the cutting edge of modular construction, and also have the experience to handle all the details of any installation. This makes the TRV II truly an effortless solution for hospitals looking to upgrade their linear accelerator without the burden of downtime.

“RAD is creating the new normal. No longer must treatment centers delay the adoption of new technology because of the consequences of being shut down and the complications caused by displacing patients,” Lefkus added.

RAD Technology Medical Systems Delivers Innovative Time Saving Modular Construction at New Swedish Cancer Institute Facility

Edmonds, WA and Aventura, FL, May 13, 2013: The residents of Edmonds and Snohomish County, Washington now have access to state-of-the-art hospital based medical oncology cancer care right in their own backyard thanks to the groundbreaking modular building techniques of RAD Technology Medical Systems and the ongoing commitment by Swedish Health Services to expand their cancer treatment offerings.

RAD Technology Medical Systems, a leader in the modular design-build industry, was selected by Swedish Health Services to engineer and construct their new outpatient medical oncology facility in Edmonds, just north of Seattle. The 17,102 square foot center constructed by RAD Technology is the latest addition to The Swedish Cancer Institute’s family of community-based cancer treatment centers.

RAD Technology’s pioneering approach to modular healthcare construction meant that the new Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds went from factory to a fully-functional facility ready for patients in a mere 14 weeks.

Custom built off-site, RAD Technology’s cutting-edge modular units are delivered directly to the site ready to be assembled. This unique approach allows for a fast and efficient on-site assembly, cutting down on the time of a traditional building project. It also allows for site development and building construction to occur simultaneously.

By choosing RAD Technology, Swedish Health Systems was able to give patients access to the new facility several months sooner than if conventional construction methods were used.

“The combination of a design-build approach and RAD’s expertise in modular healthcare construction provided a streamlined and efficient project delivery,” explained John Lefkus, Principal Partner and President of RAD Technology.

For the Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds, RAD Technology collaborated with internationally renowned architectural firm Perkins + Will on the design and program phase of the project. The design focused on creating a calming patient-centered space with large windows to optimize access to daylight. RAD Technology took on the challenge making the designs from Perkins + Will a functional reality using factory fabricated modular units. Not only does this method provide a substantial time savings over traditional construction, it also allows for seamless expansion to accommodate the Swedish Cancer Institute’s future needs.

“The number of people turning to Swedish/Edmonds for their cancer treatment has grown over the last decade,” said Richard McGee, M.D., one of five Swedish Cancer Institute medical oncologists who will practice at the new center. “This new facility constructed by RAD Technology will allow us to offer enhanced care to a growing population.”

Previously, RAD Technology provided design-build services for the Radiotherapy Center at Ballard, Washington, another one of The Swedish Cancer Institute’s community care facilities. There, RAD Technology used their patented modular radiotherapy treatment vault to house the Seattle area’s first TomoTherapy Hi-Art radiation treatment system.

“Accelerated patient services and reduced site disruption are both key drivers for organizations selecting RAD,” Lefkus added. “Swedish Cancer Institute was already familiar with RAD’s patented radiotherapy technology from the project at Ballard Hospital two years ago.”

Now, with the ability to serve over 175 chemotherapy patients a day at the new facility, patients have access to hospital-quality care without having to worry about commuting far from their homes.

“Providing excellent care starts with improving access,” said Thomas D. Brown, M.D., MBA, executive director of Swedish Cancer Institute. “New centers such as this one at Swedish/Edmonds will help ensure patients in our communities have continued convenient access to the highest quality cancer care available.”

The new center is part of a $60 million dollar campaign to revamp and expand the former Stevens Hospital campus, which Swedish took over in September 2010. In addition to 19 chemotherapy infusion suites, The Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds will also offer counseling, patient education, and financial services.

RAD Technology is committed to helping health care organizations provide the most advanced treatment options to their patients, without the delay of traditional construction projects. RAD also provides unique leasing options to assist institutions in avoiding capital constraints while advancing projects.
